Technical Questions and/or Problems Redux

pouliot's picture

When I click on the original "Technical Questions and/or Problems" topic (started by lpioch), there is nothing displayed except the first post which started the thread!
The listing of the topic still shows that there were "44" responses, however.
What happened?

Regards,
Old Sigma

Anyway, I wanted to post a public "Thank you" for the staff's efforts to recover and restore my old mail folders from the previous CE mail site. So not being able to add to the original I started this ersatz topic similarly titled.
A big THANK YOU to the CE staff.

Regards,
Old Sigma

Say!?
Are all the old forum topics locked closed or something? No postings are visible. Mostly I've checked older ones and the only things visible are the original posts. No replies, nada, nothing.

Old Sigma

Current articles, etc., have no 'comment' ability - you 'maintained' something erroneously, folks. . .

HOW COME I CAN COMMENT HERE?

*

And, 1) I clicked one article,
2) got a different article, and
3) that article's comment was a prayer request ? ? ? ! ! !

What's happening, folks?

It appears as if all forums prior to a certain date have been inadvertently (?) locked down against further posting.
I reported what I had noticed and have received an automatic reply from "skinney" so I will suppose the word will get to the support staff.

Meantime it appears as if only newly initiated topics are permitting the posting of replies.

Old Sigma

OS, the poor moderators have no ability to change code. I agree...the navigation needs to be bettered - and now that you've posted it here, the techies have a better chance at seeing it and altering it.

Somewhere along the line the problem has been fixed.
The posts responding to the previously created topics can now be read again.

Post-problems this weekend, new posts are not showing up in "My Discussions." The old ones continue to plug along fine, however.

Re: logging in.

Using a Mozilla/Firefox browser at the public library I find that my login appears not to work as I am returned to the login screen after apparent processing. However, if I go to the Forums button and click on it, the screen refresh shows I've logged in. Other than a potential security problem in a public venue, this is irritating and puzzling. Is it possible it has something to do with the cache refresh settings?

Hello pouliot,

I miss your contributions to the faith and life forum.

I have experienced a situation from time to time when I am logged in automatically when opening internet explorer as my home page is CatholicExchange. Once I click on a thread, I am no longer logged in and have to do so in order to post. If I use the back button, I become logged in again but will lose it on any page change...

In Christ,

David

Re: David T. Garrison's's post:

"...auto login..."

Likely a setting in your Internet options.
My DSL is down & I'm at a Library. Session ending and have little time for more.
Iv'e wondered if something similar was at work re observation I posted but the Library has Preferences locked down so I can't check. Could be the browser isn't refreshing the login page every time it is loaded. Don't recall where the similar setting is for IE.
(Has CE implemented spell-checking in the forums?)

I haven't seen it. Grammar check would be a wonderful tool also:}

Re: DTG's post:

"I haven't seen it. "

(Still at library.)
Maybe you don't make enough typing errors. On my screen, this wrod is faintly underlined somewhat as MS Word will do. (I'm leaving it as is for heuristic reasons, but you won't see it underlined I think.)
My HTML tags are also underlined (I use the straight text editor, not the rich-text one). I am using Mozilla/Firefox.
Later.

Re: pouliot's post

"maybe you don't make enough typing errors"

I don't know where I get it from, but I dislike sloppy spelling and grammar and while my typing skills are not good-two finger rapid-my proofreading skills are much better. As one may have noticed, I would rather correct a blatant error than maintain the position in a thread.

Maybe CE could work on an edited version of a post remaining in its position while having an annotation of being edited with a date and time stamp?

I can not see the underline in your post of wrod.

It is good to hear from you Theophilus. May your dsl return soon!

David:

I like your suggested option as I, too, like to be clear. I generally type my replies in Word, but will occasionally find that, after I post, I could have said something differently.

I don't correct the error, however, unless it is immediate, because I don't want to be accused of having changed the nature of my argument. Your solution has a lot of merit.

Michael: Thank you. It is also possible as I have seen it done on other forums. I would like to state however, that reading and re-reading one's own post as well as others is prudent as it is very difficult to understand a person you have only made contact with via a discussion forum ;}

I have corrected the error immediately and still been bumped by a poster that seemed to be awaiting my word as if we were in an actual face to face conversation. Amazin' this internet thing :}

David:

You do take that chance when you relegate your thoughts to the aether - that someone may be waiting to jump on them.

I know in my job I do allow others to read my work before it goes "live." That is a luxury we're not afforded so, to your point, it's an exercise in prudence to ask for clarity of others and make sure that one is clear in his own posts by constantly familiarizing oneself with the arguments and checking one's writing.

Michael

Re: Spellchecking

My temporary exile to public computers at the library seems to point in the direction of the Firefox/Mozilla browser being responsible for pointing out typing errors as I mentioned in my 20 October post. Note this is a free browser available by downloading.

Be that as it may, it would be nice if there were a spell-checking feature on the CE forums.

Also, point well-taken that one needs to reread one's posts.
